Football and Life As I See It

Some of you are probably wondering what I have been doing that I can't even visit or update my blog. It's a lot of things, really. Some I can't talk about, others are just not that interesting. Does anyone really want to hear all the minutiae of my job? It's exciting, believe me—but only to me and the few guys I work with.

I can't resist at least putting in a plug for my football team, the Dallas Cowboys, who are doing the impossible this year. They've won every game this year except for that heart breaker against the Patriots. But I have to say, this is shaping up like a really good movie. On one side, you have the New England Patriots, who have achieved dominance in the salary cap era. But unlike my beloved Cowboys of the 90's, they aren't withering away into obscurity. Quite the opposite—they are the toast of the league, and quite possibly one of if not the very best team that has ever been assembled. That's debatable.

And then you have the Cowboys. Once great, now a has been. Ever since we lost Troy Aikman, we've gone through a host of quarterbacks. To be the quarterback of the Dallas franchise used to mean you were the best of the best. There was a mystique. The search seemed hopeless. The magic was dead. And then came Bill Parcells, who said let there be a quarterback, and behold, there was one. An undrafted free agent from Eastern Illinois quietly signed a contract to be the third string quarterback behind Quincy "Where is he now?" Carter and Chad Hutchinson, both of whom no longer play in the NFL.

You might have heard of him. He just signed a contract for 67 million dollars. He's young, good looking, has that small town, all around nice guy feel to him. He's been connected with first with Jessica Simpson, Carrie Underwood and most recently Britney Spears, though he denies anything to do with the latter, saying that they were simply at the same party. Riiiigggght... He probably doesn't inhale when he smokes either.

It didn't last with Ms. Underwood because, as she said in an interview with a reputable newspaper (let's just say, inquiring minds want to know), that he was just too much into football. Awww.

His name? Aw come on. You already know it. Of course you do. If you don't, then wait until February when they ask him the question they ask every Superbowl winning quarterback: Where are you going now?

The Patriots put a putting good stomping on the Cowboys a couple weeks back. I watched it in the enemy lair of one Mr. Schprock, who forced me to give him a high five when Randy Moss caught what at first glance seemed to be a touchdown. In the third quarter the Cowboys moved into the lead, the first such occurance for the Pats all year. Mr. Schprock was not happy. But he had the last laugh as the Pats tore us limb from limb, punching it into the end zone when the Cowboys were already buried. But if you were paying attention, this was a much better game than it seemed.

That's all I'll say about it now. We'll be back. And this time we'll be loaded with all our starters. And we're getting better every week.

So maybe football has me a little distracted.

I can't write about it here. Most of my readers have already clicked over to comment on the first line.

I haven't been writing, or even reading for that matter. I need to get back into it, but life is pulling me in different directions right now, but I can't let it tear me apart. Life is good and all those type of disclaimers, but I am distracted by family stuff, work stuff, and the daunting threat of moving across country. I'm not even sure I have the money to do so, and I'm taking a hard look at it. But the idea of digging into the financials is intimidating, and could destroy the world as we know it. Sometimes I think about when I was young, single, no responsibilities. Man, that was a piece of cake. But now I've crested forty and I'm losing my youth in ways that I can feel and see.

I don't know what I'm saying exactly. But I have to do something different than what I'm doing.

Hey Scott, I read the whole post and know nothing about football--well American football :) I will look up your QB though.

You know, hope is a wonderful thing. Keeps us going. Sometimes you have to cope with real life before you can enjoy the frills.

And finances--ugh. I hate those bloody things!!!

More proof that you got writing skills. You held my attention through the football stuff, and made me even feel like one of the boys. I love your mojo!

I don't know how long you've been devoted to the Cowboys, but I went highschool with Seth Joyner. He dated a friend-girl of mine. If you don't know who he is then it's possible that I got it wrong when I thought he was once on the Cowboys. But if you do know who he is ... then your football kung fu is fierce.

Overall, I think that your life is busy, but the only people who'd object is us out in blogland. This is not a problem. A silent Scott who is doing well is MUCH more preferable to a multipage Scott who is typing so furiously because his life is falling apart.

Handle your business, friend!

I know nothing about football but it is very big in the South. As far as life goes, you have to make decisions and hope for the best.

Toni - In typical American style, I just assumed everyone knew about American football. His name is Tony Romo. Check out the game against the Giants this weekend if you can get it. The Giants actually played Miami in England a couple weeks ago. Apparently its a little muddy there?

Alan - Thanks, man! Seth Joyner never played for the Cowboys, but he did make his rounds of the league. He was primarily an Eagle. You can read about him here.

Dixie - Truer words were never spoken. Football is big in the south.

LOL - I made it through even though I admit to skimming. Football, football, Britney Spears... What?! Go back and read... LOL.

I understand what you're saying about how much responsibility is on your shoulders once you're kind of established, married with kids, etc. My husband feels that. He'd like to go back to school, but it's just no do-able. We can't waste money on that and he's too tired from work. Kind of a catch-22.

I read the whole post, too, even though I hate American football. Is that Dallas quarterback guy's name Tony Romo? The only reason I even have a clue is because you wrote about him last year.

Scott,

(((Dude))) you gotta do what you gotta do. My life pulled me in a different direction and I took five months away from blogging. Things happen. Stuff comes up. You have to do what's best for you. Blog when you can. Stop by and visit to let us know when you're back, and don't apologize for having a life. This is for entertainment purposes only.

Love and hugs!

I can't watch the NFL over here because it is on at Stupid O'Clock.

I watch the superbowl every year though, and when I get over there next year, I'm going to see a game in person.

I'll be in your neck of the woods, by the way. I want to watch the Celtics too.

We've PMed a bit so I know you've been absent a while. I like football. I hate the Patriots and I DETEST their QB. I won't even type his name because I hate him that much. Cheating bastards = The Patriots. Nuff said.

Hey! I read the whole post! :)...I've been a bit distracted too and not blogging much...and those financials..well they scare all of us...but as I learned in my motivational finance class..if you don't like what you're getting stop doing what you're doing and try something else...makes sense to me...and Alan..even I know who Seth Joyner is...:) my Eagle background is showing I guess..:)

Jada's G, cool! My little slice of a teenhood has made it out alive!

Mind you, Seth and I were never great friends. See, he was *literally* Captain of the football team, and my friend-girls were cheerleaders. So I only nodded "What's ups" to him when he came by the lunch table to flirt with my crowd. Actually, he was far more shy than the average highschool jock. But at least he got the girl. Me, I was hanging out with them and still too shy to cross over from friendhood into datehood.

I was the Xander Harris of our bunch, circa the first three seasons of Buffy ... except you know ... no vamps to dust ...

Sorry, Scott. I still prefer Peyton Manning to your wonder boy. I haven't been watching much football this year (things are dismal for my Vikings aside from that one ray of light named Adrian...) but I sure see Peyton in enough commercials and he cracks me up every single time!

This is what I came over for. I love it when you talk football. I think they might just make it this year. But I'm not sure about winning the Super Bowl. I'm not that confident about their ability to beat New England. But I do dream.
