Today is the Day

Today at one thirty I present my first design documents to the company masses. I'm not nervous actually. All will be well.

I saw a strange movie last night, Broken Flowers. Bill Murray. I always like Bill Murray, even if he just sits in a chair with that blank look and says nothing. His interaction with his polar opposite, mystery loving, Ethiopian neighbor is priceless. This was a strange movie though, in the spirit of indy filmdom, it ends quite unconventionally, with questions unanswered. Or maybe I missed the flight. Has anyone else seen it? If so, can you tell me what the hell happened at the end? I won't spoil it by giving you my two cent opinion, at least for now. Just tell me what you thought.

I forgot to register my thoughts on the Lindsay Jacobellis snafu. If you didn't see it, or didn't hear about it from thousands of media outlets, Jacobellis had the lead in a four-person snowboarding race by such a margin that victory was assured. But she decided to get fancy over a jump in clear view of the finish line and did a stunt, landed funny and slid off the track on her tush. She managed to finish and win the silver, but nefariously went into the history books, a feature of future highlight reels. Remember the old ABC Wide World of Sports? The thrill of victory, and the agony of defeat. Insert Jacobellis. Not exactly what she had in mind.

I will say this to all the detractors: she's just a kid, so cut her some slack. And even if she wasn't a kid, go bleep yourself. She fought one hell of a race, and I for one was quite proud.

It's a painful lesson she won't soon forget. We all have to learn them, so this was her turn.

I thought I heard her say that she wasn't going for a trick, but that she had had problems with that jump and was just trying some new grip to keep from falling (or something like that) and it didn't work. Good gracious, she got a Silver - yeah, it wasn't a Gold, but look at all of the athletes who didn't get anything!

Tanya - Here here.

Eve - I heard her say the same thing but I'm not sure I believe her. It really doesn't matter to me either way. I'm glad she won the silver. The announcer said it best though: "That's not the face of a woman who just won silver. That's the face of a woman who just lost gold."

And I'd bet she's kicking herself worse than anybody else could. Besides, I hear she got pretty badly banged up.

I've added Broken Flowers to the top of Netflix queue, so I'll let you know. Jim Jarmusch films are always interesting...

Scott, I didn't see the event, but it sounds like she was humiliated enough! I haven't seen the films either. Gosh, I'm behind. =/

I saw Broken Flowers. Here's my pedestrian, phillistine opinion: what a waste of Bill Murray. He was too subdued, and all the pauses were too long. It was like forcing a gymnast to wear a straitjacket. I did like a lot of the stuff, it was kind of a neat premise, but why cast Bill Murray especially play the lead? And I couldn't understand his apparent babe-magnitude.

Kat - I can't wait to hear what you think. I've never heard of the director before, but maybe I would understand him better if I had seen other films of his.

Beth - I'm finding that lots of people don't watch the Winter Olympics. I'm fascinated by the athletes.

Mr. Schprock - Interesting take, and I have to agree, but I didn't realize it until you said. But still, even when he's playing it straight he fascinates me. See The Razor's Edge. What was the deal at the end? Was that his boy? And who was the mother? I'm assuming it was the last ex-girlfriend. And yeah, he dated the young Jessica Lange and Sharon Stone? No way.

That'll scar her for the rest of her life if she doesn't come back and get the gold next time.

Scott - I highly recommend Night on Earth (which is hard to find since it's not on DVD yet) and the other one of his that I've seen is a Johnny Depp film called Dead Man - it's a black & white cowboy movie, but so much more than that. I need to see it again as it was about ten years ago that I had seen it.

And if I'm going to watch any Olympics, it's the Winter. Summer bores me.

Okay, I finally saw Broken Flowers. I think it was one of those movies where you're supposed to decide for yourself what happened. I have to think, though, that from the violent reaction from the last woman that she's the mother.

I think the long pauses are because it's an independent film and hence, he can do it. Jim Jarmusch is going to attract a certain audience who will look at the pauses as being meaningful or whatever. I have to agree with Mr. Schprock that it made the film move a tad slowly, but I didn't hate it.

And there is nothing on God's Green Earth that makes me consider Bill Murray as a babe magnet or anything similar.
