Drumming

This morning I put on an old CD and discovered three things. The first is that I've been listening to news and audio books for so long that I'm disconnected from my musical roots. Two, I love my old music. I know every word, every inflection, of my favorite cds from that dusty case--even the songs that never made it to the radio. Three, I still can't hit the high notes, but I'm one hell of an air drummer. The floorboard is my bass drum, the steering wheel my snare, the dash board all those other bongo sounding drums, and the passenger seat headrest a cymbol when I have a serious point to make. Every once in a while I catch a bewildered look from another commuter, a knowing smile from another. I play it cool when I settle in for a light, singing along while trying to look bored, but I still get caught.

As for Toni's question: am I a plotter? I start with an idea and work my way towards it. I try to plot ahead but circumstances change, and I have to be flexible. You know? I will be honest though. Until this morning in the shower, and not until I rinsed the shampoo from my hair, did I realize how my story (Part 1, Part 2) is going to end. Even now the details are fuzzy. It should be cool though.

I caught someone pretending to play a trombone while driving - that was interesting.

You sound like me with my writing. I don't always know where things are going when I start a book.

I hope my family never gets the big idea to nominate me for VH-1's Motormouth. I'd have to kill them all. Though I never get to the point of stopping the car to dance. Yet.

A friend made a mixed CD last summer which he gave me (hope he doesn't want it back). Driving along 696 one day it reached a song that required dancing, so I was dancing my little heart out as I drove along. My sister was in the car and said that the man in the car next to me was laughing, but gave me the thumbs up.

And I've been known to air conduct Pachebel's Canon in D.

I have an incredibly long drive home from work now. If it were not for music, some old some new, I would go nuts and not be able to unwind.

I love listening to my old favourite CDs. I find myself downloading them onto the computer even though I have them in every other format! I listened to Tracy Chapmen and Suzanne Vega the other day--awesome.

Thanks for telling us how you work. I'm always interested in how people get from start to finish and everyone is so different. It is reassuring.

Have you been making little notes to yourself, or do you work completely in your head? I forget things if i don;t write them down.

Secret: I give full concerts to my knick-knacks while I pretend to be Tori Amos. shh.

Damn this template. It's making me want my vacation NOW.... LOL.

We have something in common! I'm an EXCELLENT air drummer, too! We rock ;)

I have been getting back into my old CD's. I left them for too long to listen to pop/hip hop radio stations... some RUSH has been long overdue.

"Old Music" for me, I'm afraid, means stuff like Radiohead or Weezer. Not really all that old, is it? Most music that is actually "old", I have been getting into more over the last few years!

So what IS your "old music"?

When I play air guitar and air drums, my air audience get unruly and throws things at me, forcing my air security hold them back with night sticks and pepper spray.

That's the latest news from my No Refund World Tour.

I have similar trouble to Schprock.

He should enter the Air Guitar world championships.

Sing, even if you do get caught ;). I don't know many people who DON'T sing in the car, and there's no reason you shouldn't enjoy it!

*grin* Besides, I want to hear those high notes.

OK, I'm still cracking up over Schprock's "no refund world tour" comment. We're serious musicians in this house. Everyone plays something, hubby and I more than one thing and hubby's quote is, "You know someone can't play an instrument, when they're doing air play." Haha. He's not an elitist, but he loves music. I've never seen someone who lived for it the way he does ... it's quite sick, actually. =/

I often get caught in a musical moment. The other day I was dancing in my car and I looked over and the teenage girl in the car beside me was laughing and then we had a car dance off. I won. lol

You go wit ya bad self boyeee! ;P

I sing AND blues dance in the car, so it's all good there, Scott! Never lose those moments - they're what keep you young...that and all the anti-aging vitamins :)
